The position sensitive detectors of the IBIS telescope are surrounded by an active shield based on 2 cm thick BGO crystal as scintillator material. This Subsystem comprises 16 Veto Detection Modules and a dedicated electronics. Rejecting the events, which produce a coincident signal on the shield and the main detector by the electronics, provides a method to reduce the background and therefore to improve the instrument sensitivity. Implementing a Mass Model of the Veto Detection Modules, the electro-photonic shower inside the materials, caused by gamma sources, has been simulated using the GEANT Monte Carlo code. The simulation results show that the use of the anti-coincidence creates an almost constant 24 - 30% improvement, compared to a passive shield of the same mass, in the gamma background shielding efficiency across the whole energy range. Also the detector response for a Cs-137 laboratory source has been simulated. In this case the energy spectrum is strongly dependent on the radiation scattered off the surrounding passive materials. In particular there is an experimental evidence, well reproduced by the Monte Carlo, of the line caused by the gamma backscattered radiation.
