The high-energy satellites in operation and in development are able to provide high-energy long-term monitoring including generation of light curves for numerous X-ray and gamma-ray sources. These long-term observations are very valuable for understanding the time evolution and the physical nature of high-energy sources such as AGNs, QSOs, blazars, X-ray binaries etc. However, much more scientific conclusions could be drawn if there would be suitable simultaneous and quasi-simultaneous optical data for these sources to look for time correlation and to compare theoretical models and observational data. These optical data may be provided by photographic and CCD monitors. We report on these monitors, discuss and compare them (Sonneberg, Ondrejov, ROTSE) as well as on recent efforts of digitization and scientific use of these data. We also report on recent efforts to create easy access to the data recorded on archival plates by establishing a European plate center/network.
