Gamma-Ray Bursts, Host Galaxies

We show that the color variations of the optical afterglows (OAs) of GRBs during the decline are relatively small and allow a comparison among them, especially for t-T0 < 10 days. The colors in the observer's frame, corrected for the Galactic reddening, concentrate at (V-R)0 = 0.39+/-0.12, (R-I)0 = 0.42+/-0.15, (B-V)0 = 0.45+/-0.18 and suggest that both the slope of the spectrum and the intrinsic reddening must be quite similar for all OAs. Most host galaxies lie within z = 0.43 to 1.6. The absolute brightnesses of the host galaxies in the observer's frame range from MR0 = -21.5 to -17.7. (R-I)0 tends to decrease towards the more luminous galaxies while (B-V)0 does not change significantly for largely different MR0 of the galaxies with similar z.
