M87 is the nearest galaxy with a bright radio / optical / X-ray jet, and affords an unparalleled opportunity to study extragalactic jet phenomena at high resolution. We propose the initial phase of a long-term variability study of the core and jet of M87 with 5 ACIS observations at intervals of 2 months. We will correlate X-ray brightness variations in both time and place with morphological features (shocks within knots) and structural changes (emergence of new superluminal features) seen in our high resolution radio / optical studies of the 20" jet. Our ultimate goal is to learn what processes and phyical conditions are responsible for producing X-rays in AGN jets.
