SNR 0506-68.0 is the brightest LMC supernova remnant not yet observed by Chandra. According to ASCA data it displays a higher mean metallicity than nearly all of the other LMC remnants that are larger (e.g., DEM 71, N132D, and N63A). On the other hand all LMC SNRs smaller than 0506-68.0 display evidence for being young, i.e., a rapid pulsar, oxygen-rich optical emission or ejecta-dominated X-ray emission. Thus 0506-68.0 appears to be a remnant in a transitional phase of evolution between youth and middle age. We wish to use Chandra to detect and study the ejecta emission that ASCA claims is there and investigate how the metals from SNe ultimately mix into the ISM.
