Twelve symbiotic stars and related objects were observed at the 1612 MHz
OH line with negative results. The infrared pumping rate is calculated
and upper limits are given for the 1612 MHz line. A probable value for
the least amount of infrared photons per second necessary for an OH
maser is also suggested.
