The irregular or fretted erosional scarps observed in layered terrain on Io are discussed. Most of the erosional scarps were observed in the south polar region, in association with caldera scarps, flow-front scarps and tectonic scarps, which indicates formation by a combination of surface flow and tectonic processes. Transection and superposition relations between the various scarps indicate a complex history of deposition, faulting and erosion. Erosional scarps were also detected in mid-latitude and equatorial regions. An internal sapping mechanism involving the release of liquid sulfur dioxide through cracks or fissures along the edges of boundary scarps is proposed to account for the irregular appearance of the erosional scarps on Io.
