Presently available evidence appears to favour the view that spiral and lenticular galaxies form parallel sequences of increasing disk-to-bulge ratio that differ only in their total gas content. It is argued that lenticular galaxies should not be identified with the hypothetical class of S0 galaxies which Hubble (1936) introduced as transitional objects intermediate between elliptical and spiral galaxies.
