The Bianchi type-V model of an open anisotropic universe is investigated analytically, integrating the geodesic equations. The Ricci components of the type-V diagonal metric are derived, and the vacuum-field equations are solved exactly. The Euler-Lagrange motion equations corresponding to the geodesic-equation solution are determined and integrated to find the parametric equations of the geodesics and, specifically, of the null geodesics, for which the coordinates are also found. It is pointed out that vacuum models are just as useful as perfect-fluid models for understanding the behavior of the model geometry near the singularity.
