The author considers the case of the period-luminosity-colour relationship for classical cepheids in the LMC as an example of the estimation of parameters in a functional relationship when two of the variables have correlated errors. The correlation in this example arises through the reddening corrections. In general, the problem is soluble only if the variances of all but one of the variables are known or if their ratios can be determined. The colour coefficient in the PLC relationship is practically unaffected by this effect unless the standard deviation of the colour excess is larger than what is considered to be an upper limit.
