Classification techniques lie at the heart of a number of disciplines. Pattern recognition in particular has become a large subfield of engineering, some examples of its use are given. The general design of classification procedures for use in solving physical problems is discussed, with particular emphasis given to the effects of systematic error. The subjects multivariate analysis, factor analysis (principal component analysis), discriminant analysis, multidimensional scaling, cluster analysis and syntactic pattern recognition are discussed, and a bibliography is given for each. Some possibilities for the future classification of clusters of galaxies are indicated.
