Early results from operation of the European X ray observatory (Exosat) are reported. Observations have been made in the 2-30 kev range of the Cassiopeia-A SNR, providing data on the variation of the gas temperature and mass throughout the remnant. Analyses are under way on the interaction in the blast wave with the surrounding interstellar medium and the local inhomogeneities. Several new X ray sources were discovered during calibration measurements using Cyg X-1 as the target. The cataclysmic binary Am Her has been determined to have a period of 3 hr, in contrast with previous estimates of 1.5 hr made with LEO stationed spacecraft. An accreting white dwarf has been discovered in GK-Per, and its companion has been determined to have an orbital period of about 2 d. X ray emission from Jupiter, Algol, and active galactic nuclei have also been tracked.
