Analytic results are presented for tidally produced gravitational radiation from homogeneous stars within the quadrupole formalism of general relativity. The calculation is simplified by the observation that, for homogeneous stars, only the incompressible 'Kelvin' normal modes are excited by a tidal potential. The results are compared with the general formalism of Turner, and with the calculations by Mashhoon of tidal gravitational radiation from homogeneous stars falling into nonrotating black holes. The energy flux in tidal radiation is a small fraction of that produced by the orbital motion of the stars. Also considered is the axisymmetric two-body problem of Cooperstock et al., in which two identical homogeneous bodies begin to fall toward each other after dissolution of a strut and skins that had held them apart in static equilibrium. It is demonstrated explicitly that the Cooperstock et al. flux is consistent with the initial, short-lived flux of tidal gravitational radiation that results when the stars are suddenly thrown out of equilibrium by dissolution of the skins.
