Scientific paper

The present paper deals with the existing discrepancy between rocket and satellite measurements of the longitudinal currents in the evening sector of the auroral ionosphere. The longitudinal current densities recorded from rockets are higher by one or two orders of magnitude than those recorded from satellites. The formation of longitudinal currents in the ionosphere due to the horizontal and vertical inhomogeneity of the conductivity is analyzed, and an explanation for the discrepancy under consideration is proposed.
