The authors discuss the secular changes in the optical output of pulsars assuming that the emission process is incoherent synchrotron by secondary e+-e- pairs. The monochromatic luminosity turns out to be a very steep function of the period, in agreement with the observational evidence. For pulsars spinning much faster than PSR 0531, synchrotron reabsorption may set in at optical frequencies and greatly reduce their visibility.
