Ion composition measurements of the primary magnetosheath ions (H and He) in the lower altitude dayside cusp provide information on the processes acting on the plasma between the solar wind source and the point of observation. They suggest that at times the processes are purely adiabatic while at other times parallel electrostatic fields are implied. Measurements of ionospheric constituents (specifically 0) reveal that these ions are continuously being accelerated to energies of the order of keV within the lower altitude cusp region and are being injected along with the plasma of magnetosheath origin into the high latitude boundary layers.
