Selected GEOS 2 particle intensities (ions 27 keV, electrons 22 keV) and asymmetric pitch angle distributions are compared with STARE ionospheric electron flow patterns and scattering structures just after the August 28, 1978 magnetopause crossing at 0530 UT. The combined results indicate the presence at the magnetopause of eastward moving localized merging regions through which magnetopause plasma is expelled into the magnetosheath.
