A heated plasma component was found in the plasma mantle close to the magnetopause by means of the Swedish-Soviet collaborative experiment PROMICS onboard the highly eccentric orbit satellite Prognoz 7. Both electrons and ions are heated. The heated plasma is at least partly of ionospheric origin. The total amount of energy loss through the tailward flow of the heated plasma is estimated to be of the order of 100 giga W.
