Selection effects in the identification of trends in the redshift distribution of quasars are investigated quantitatively for 1158 quasars with listed emission lines in the catalog of Hewitt and Burbidge (1980). The primary effect considered is that of the choice of lines for redshift identification: the frequencies of appearance of the individual lines in the sample are listed in a table; the maximum and minimum redshifts associated with them are calculated for groups of 'key' lines; and the histogram of the redshift distribution predicted by the selection factors alone is compared to that of the 'observed' distribution. Four of the six peaks in the observational redshift distribution are found to correspond to peaks in the selection-related distribution, with a correlation coefficient of about 0.55. While the peak at z = 1.9 is probably due to selection effects, the peak at z = 2.3 can be attributed with some confidence to cosmological redshift.
