Published absorption spectra of quasars with redshifts z = 2-3 are examined for evidence of spherical shock waves in the metagalactic medium. It is shown analytically that a doublet will appear in the Lyman-alpha line of the absorption spectra of quasars when their light passes through a spherical shock front. The separation (less than about 3 A) and equivalent widths (about 0.01-0.3 A) of the doublets are estimated, and an expression relating them is derived. The presence of such doublets in the quasar data of Sargent et al. (1980, 1982) and Young et al. (1982) is demonstrated, and the parameters are listed in tables for seven quasars. Further implications and the need for more observations are indicated.
