Effects of particle relativism and a fixed homogeneous plasma background on the development of the two main branches of the tearing-mode instability in a collisionless plasma are investigated. These two branches are: (1) the resonance tearing mode, the mechanism of which is based on Landau damping, and (2) the inertial kinetic tearing mode, which occurs for beta values that are not too small and into which the first mode develops if the particle motion in the transition layer is magnetized by a field directed along the equilibrium current. The increments of both branches are determined for a plasma-particle temperature that is arbitrary with respect to rest energy. It is found that for relativistic temperatures the nature of the instability in both modes is no longer purely electronic and that both ions and electrons make a first-order contribution to instability development. The stabilizing effect of a fixed homogeneous plasma background of arbitrary temperature on the two instability modes is considered.
