Her X-1 has not been detected in photometric observations of HZ Herculis conducted in June 1983. It is suggested that the optical variability of the 35-day cycle is slowly decaying, while the irradiation of HZ Herculis by X-rays remains strong. This process may be related to the observed decrease in the spin-up rate of Her X-1, which may be due to an increase in magnetic braking caused by a change in disk physical parameters. These changes are not in accord with the predictions of the precessing disk model. They may instead be accounted for by a change in the physical parameters of the disk.
