Simulated beta indices have been calculated with various actual and contrived filter transmission functions. The effect of filter width and central wavelength on beta photometry are studied. By using photoelectric scans of a number of standard stars a transformation is derived between the calculated indices and the standard system. Observational effects are discussed, and it is concluded that a color term should be used in the reductions and that if the narrow filter is centered longward of the line center it is necessary to reduce the stars later than AO with a separate transformation from the earlier stars
