We present a detailed study of the L1448 region within the Perseus molecular cloud. This region contains dense molecular cores of very diverse nature, ranging from cores with embedded young stellar objects over cores close to the onset of star-formation to cores possibly representing the earliest stages of dense core formation. Based on an extensive dataset collected by the COMPLETE survey of star-forming clouds, we characterize the dense cores within L1448. Particular attention is paid to unusual molecular abundances possibly heralding low chemical ages of dense cores in this region. The COMPLETE data, however, also allows to study the context between dense core chemical properties (e.g., chemical abundances, densities, star-formation activity, and kinematical state) and the properties of the enveloping low-density gas. This reveals that molecular clouds are complex in structure, also suggesting a complex formation history of the cloud. A particular feature of L1448 are large-scale (about 1 pc) trends in gas velocity possibly indicating collision or interaction of flows of interstellar gas within this area. This research is in particular enabled by innovative dense core identification methods and 3D visualization techniques.
