We present the results of an observational and numerical (N-body simulations) study of the Carina and Leo I dwarf spheroidal galaxies. We show that simple, single-component, dark matter-dominated models undergoing tidal stripping can reproduce all salient structural and dynamical properties of these systems, particularly in their outer parts. In addition, we present preliminary results of a radial velocity survey of 12,000 giant stars aimed at finding kinematical substructure, i.e., stellar streams formed from past accretion events, in the Galactic halo. We discuss the implications of these findings in the context of present ``concordance'' Cold-Dark-Matter (CDM) cosmogonies which predict that galaxies like the Milky Way form hierarchically from accretion of smaller systems.
