Hierarchical models and observations show that galaxy mergers and interactions play a key role in galaxy assembly and star formation, but to what extent is still unclear. By probing both the number of mergers and their star forming properties as a function of mass, type and redshift we can better quantify the role that merging plays in the IR luminosity and star formation rate densities of the Universe. The presence of long tidal tails and bridges are robust signatures of recent merger activity. This completely dynamical phenomenon was used to develop a visual classification scheme to identify interacting galaxies and probe the interaction fraction and merger rate. This technique was applied to 2 sq. degrees of the Canada France Hawaii Telescope Legacy Survey (CFHTLS-Deep) and was complied into the CFHTLS-Deep Catalog of Interacting Galaxies. The survey's depth, high image quality and Spitzer coverage have made it possible to probe the interaction rate, and level of induced star formation and AGN activity throughout the merger sequence out to z 1. In this talk I will present the results from our classification of 30,000 galaxies in the CFHTLS-Deep, which yield one of the first statistically secure, lower limits, for the galaxy interaction fraction between 0.2
