We discuss the observed effects of AGN outbursts on the hot gas in clusters, groups, and early type galaxies with a focus on the 500 ksec Chandra observation of M87. Using a model for the recent outburst from the supermassive black hole in M87, we derive the outburst parameters including energy, age, and duration. For M87, we show that the outburst energy is comparable to the radiated energy and is likely a significant energy input to the gaseous atmosphere. We compare the M87 outburst to those seen in rich clusters as well as to those detected in individual early type galaxies through their gaseous cavities. For all these systems, we discuss the energy balance between radiation and AGN energy input.
