High redshift observations are opening larger and larger windows on galaxy formation and evolution in the first billion of years, with very rare, bright quasars identified from all sky surveys and more common galaxies observed through deep narrow beam programs, such as GOODS and the UDF. By means of cosmological simulations of structure formation we quantify the typical systematic uncertainties in the observed luminosity function due to cosmic variance, not only in its normalization but also in the shape. We then discuss the link of these z 6 galaxies and quasars with the very first PopIII stars formed at z>40, which provide early seeding for chemical enrichment of the interstellar medium and for the growth of supermassive BHs.
