Only low mass OH/IR stars were seen to lose their 1612 MHz masers since 1985, while those of IRAS 19479+2111 also switched ON again. These phenomena are expected from changes to the maser pump consequent on large changes in mass-loss rate, dM/dt. Further, models show that when dM/dt - > 0, for 50 years afterwards the (25-12) μ m color of a circumstellar shell is little changed, though its H-K quickly gets bluer. By revisiting the statistics from the complete, high-latitude subset of the Arecibo survey, we find 100% of MIR selected sources are detected when (25-12) μ m > -0.45. Thus no star with redder MIR colors should exhibit modulated 1612 MHz masers. Further our statistics show that 50% of sources are detected when -0.55 < (25-12) μ m < -0 .50, and 30% when -0.60 < (25-12) μ m 0.40, whereas many of the 1612 MHz nondetections or mimics are bluer. This is expected if the nondetections are currently latched in a modulated OFF state by their current dM/dt, while leaving them with the MIR colors of OH/IR stars. Thus 26% of the mimics with -0.65 < (25-12) μ m < -0.60 and 38% of those with -0.70 < (25-12) μ m < -0.65 have H-K < 0.4. We will present the full NIR statistics for the Arecibo high-latitude sample to confirm this expectation, and test for any difference in spectral type between the OH/IR stars and the mimics.
