We report on the status of an ongoing observational and theoretical investigation of nuclear processing and element distributions in the Crab Nebula. Optical and near-infrared spectra were obtained at hundreds of positions throughout the nebular structure, and gas domains that apparently represent various expected stages of nucleosynthesis have been identified. We theoretically analyzed physical and chemical conditions in the gas using the CLOUDY numerical code, allowing for possible modifications to take into account photoionization of "filaments" by a surrounding synchrotron radiation field. We have also examined the possibility that iron-peak nuclei, like nickel, may be enhanced in a wind from the surface of the young, hot neutron star. Overall results suggest gas where processing effectively stopped with the CNO-cycle and also gas in which considerable helium-burning occurred. In addition, regions with enhanced products of oxygen-burning and with high apparent concentrations of nickel were consistently modeled.
