In the long-standing quest for a coherent picture of galaxy evolution, the last decade has yielded new insights on both theoretical and observational fronts, and we now face novel challenges. Hierarchical LCDM models currently provide one of the most successful paradigms for the growth of dark matter on large scales, but several areas of discord remain in predicting how the baryonic components of galaxies evolve, such as the angular momentum crisis, and the problem of bulgeless galaxies. Pivotal empirical constraints on these models, as well as direct insights into the assembly of galaxies, are stemming from new observational results on the merger and star formation history, the assembly of bulges, bars, and disks, and the process of secular evolution. I will discuss some of these advances based on large and deep galaxy surveys, such as GEMS, GOODS, DEEP, COSMOS, and HUDF, as well as ground-based data. The task of piecing together the evolution of galaxies as a function of both epoch and environment remains in its infancy. I will highlight some new multiwavelength surveys of galaxies in dense cluster environments (e.g Coma, Abell 901/902) and discuss early results. I will illustrate the power of synergistic education and public outreach efforts in the era of legacy surveys. In conclusion, we will assess outstanding challenges that can be resolved by future facilities such as WFPC3 on HST, the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA), the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), and and large ground-based telescopes.
