We have imaged 6 candidate pre-protocluster cores in the N2H+ (3-2) line, and dust continuum. The sample was observed in the SMA sub-compact configuration. We detect significant line, and continuum emission with evidence of sub-structure. Total clump masses estimated are 60 - 800 solar masses. In 12/15 cores, the absence of MIR emission indicates their pre-stellar or very early protostellar nature. Combined with higher angular resolution data, we deduce that only 10% of the clump mass is bound in cores, and that the mean density increases towards the core center. The turbulent motions in the pre-protocluster cores is still supersonic.
