Observations of young stars and their circumstellar environments using infrared long baseline interferometers started just under a decade ago. Yet, from the very first findings, the new milliarcsecond spatial resolution observational window greatly improved our understanding of disk regions at stellocentric radii 0.1-10 AU. As the field has continued to mature and provide increased sensitivity, dynamic range and more powerful observables - spectral visibilities and closure phases - we enter a new era where statistical studies and detailed modelling are directly addressing a variety of important unanswered questions concerning the precise physical conditions in these pre-planetary environments. Instrumental efforts currently taking place also promise to soon deliver model independent images of the innermost disk regions.
