We present our photometric monitoring study of the dense old open cluster NGC 6253, aiming at identifying and classifying the variable stars in the cluster. R-band images of NGC 6253 were taken using the 1.0 m SMARTS telescope at CTIO, with the primary goal of searching for cataclysmic variables (CVs) in the cluster. We used aperture photometry and AstroVar to detect and study the variable star population of the cluster. In this poster we present 61 newly discovered variable stars, including five W UMa systems and two candidate RR Lyrae.
