In early 2007 ground-based observations of Eta Carinae recorded a sudden 0.2 to 0.3 magnitude drop in brightness of the star and the nebula combined. This sudden drop in brightness was recorded in broad-band optical filters so it was unclear if the change in brightness was a change in the continuum or the broad dominant emission features in the stellar spectrum. The ground-based observations were also unable to tell if the flux changed in the star or the surrounding eject. During the recent fading, photometry was gathered with the HST WFPC2 and a spectrum was obtained with GMOS on Gemini South. Those data provide information about what occurred in early 2007.
