We summarize results of a 91 ksec Chandra X-ray observation of the young Sigma Orionis cluster in the Ori OB1b association. The primary objective was to obtain HETG grating spectra of the massive binary Sigma Ori AB to test wind shock models, but we focus here on analysis of the high spatial resolution image of the 8 x 8 arc-min central cluster region captured on the primary ACIS-S3 CCD. Chandra detected 41 X-ray sources on the S3 chip including the massive stars Sig Ori AB (O9.5V+B0.5V), Sig Ori E (B2Vpe), and HD 37525 (B5V). All but five sources have near-IR or optical counterparts. X-ray variability was detected in nine sources (22%), including the magnetic Bp star Sig Ori E. The brightest X-ray detection Sig Ori AB has notably soft emission that is more typical of a wind shock origin than magnetic (coronal) emission. The near-IR colors of 2MASS counterparts are in most cases consistent with normally-reddened low-mass stars, but a few IR-excess sources are noted. We provide a first look at the X-ray properties of the young stellar object IRS-1 detected at an offset of just 3 arc-secs from Sig Ori AB.
