New results on the kinematics of galaxies to z 1 from the DEEP2 Galaxy Survey are presented. Linewidths for 25,000 galaxies are derived from spectra taken with the DEIMOS spectrograph on Keck II. We present the distribution of these linewidths, or, the galaxy velocity function. It is analogous to the galaxy luminosity function but relates more directly to dark halo masses. The velocity function and its evolution since z 1 are compared with predictions for the mass function of dark matter halos given by the N-body simulations of Wechsler et al. We discuss new insights into the growth of galaxy-sized dark structure and the effects of baryonic processes that the comparison illuminates.
