I show that irradiation by the white dwarf truncates the quiescent accretion discs in dwarf novae outside the radius of this star, leaving only a hot-state disc region of very low surface density within this radius. This causes the delay in the ultraviolet rise in outburst, and the absence of a steady boundary layer in quiescence. I discuss the quiescent ultraviolet and X-ray emission of these systems.
