Hierarchical models of galaxy formation suggest that quasars are formed in dark matter halos through galaxy mergers. We test these models by measuring the quasar-galaxy projected cross correlation function of 420 quasars from the 2dF survey with ?000; Luminous Red Galaxies (LRGs) from the 2dF-SDSS LRG and QSO (2SLAQ) survey.
We find that on scales of 0.4-10h-1 Mpc, the QG correlation function has a correlation length of r_0=5.69 ± 0.20h-1 Mpc and γ =1.51 ± 0.08. This length is 2σ lower than our measured GG correlation for 2SLAQ galaxies suggesting that for z=0.2-0.8, quasars are less highly clustered than LRGs. This result may present problems for these hierarchical models.
