We investigate the connections between the UV-optical and mid-infrared spectral properties of 16 bright, low-redshift quasars. We find a correlation between the UV-optical continuum slope and the relative strength of mid-infrared emission that suggests intrinsic dust reddening even in very blue quasars. It also suggests that the line-of-sight dust in type 1 quasars can likely trace the overall dusty environment surrounding the central engine.
In support of this, we also find a correlation between UV-optical continuum slope and mid-IR continuum slope between 8--30 micron, suggesting that quasars may have an extended cool dust distribution that is responsible for the line-of-sight dust reddening. We also show that the equivalent width of the 10 micron silicate feature is related to the optical Eigenvector 1 relationship in the sense that no object is strong in both optical FeII and 10 micron silicate emission. We interpret this as an effect of broad-line-region covering factor.
