Tracing the Galactic Halo Using RR Lyrae Stars from the SDSS-II SN Survey

We describe an ongoing analysis of the metallicity and kinematics of RR Lyrae stars discovered during the course of the SDSS-II Supernova Survey. This survey covers a 2.5 degree equatorial stripe ranging from -60 to +60 degrees in right ascension, which corresponds to relatively high southern Galactic latitudes in the anti-center direction. Currently, we we have identified a sample of 293 RR Lyrae stars selected from the survey area, based on light curves obtained from the repeated SN scans. We now have medium-resolution spectra for some 150 of these stars, from either previous SDSS spectroscopy or recently acquired at the Blanco 4m telescope. The stars with available spectroscopy cover a range in average g magnitude from 14 to 18, corresponding to distances between 5 and 30 kpc from the Sun.
We explore the metallicity and radial velocity distributions of these stars. This information, along with the derived periods and amplitudes of the RR Lyrae, is used to discuss how the nature of the RR Lyrae population changes as a function of radial distance in the halo, and compare with expectations from the recently claimed dual halo of Carollo et al. (2007, Nature, in press).
