The most metal-polluted white dwarfs usually possess an infrared excess; these stars are well modeled by the tidal disruption and subsequent accretion of a single large asteroid. Here, we propose that the more numerous contaminated white dwarfs without an infrared excess are experienciing continuous accretion of gas-phase material that is ultimately derived from the tidal disruption of multiple small asteroids. If this scenario is correct, abundance determinations in the atmospheres of white dwarfs without an infrared excess serve to measure the bulk composition of ensembles of minor planets.
