We present the results of an effort to resolve the kinematic distance ambiguity towards 6.7 GHz methanol masers. The 6.7 GHz line is an excellent signpost of early phases of massive star formation and is thus expected to trace the spiral arms in the Galaxy. Except for a few sources, most distances to methanol masers are calculated using kinematics, which suffers from an ambiguity between two distances in the first and fourth quadrants. We have used VLA HI observations to resolve the distance ambiguity towards a large sample of methanol masers in the first quadrant, and discuss the implications of our results for Galactic structure.
