We propose XMM-Newton observations of two galaxies with morphologies closely resembling the classic Sc spiral galaxy M101. These observations will complete a mini-sample of the seven nearest M101 "look-alikes". This will allow us to study the range of X-ray properties displayed by a sample of galaxies unbiased by incompleteness or confused by different galaxy types. We will use simple quantitative measurements to determine whether the optical similarity of these galaxies is matched in X-rays, or if other characteristics (e.g. varying star formation rates and locations) lead to different X-ray properties.
