The Orion region provides the nearest example of a giant molecular cloud where both low and high-mass stars are actively forming. One of the most spectacular star-forming regions in Orion is the embedded IR cluster near the reflection nebula NGC 2071. More than 100 IR sources surround an embedded subgroup of several massive protostars traced by masers and ultra-compact HII regions. We propose to undertake the first systematic X-ray study of the NGC 2071 IR cluster to search for X-rays from its massive central protostars, their jets and shocked outflows, and the surrounding population of lower mass pre-main-sequence stars - many of which are still surrounded by disks.
