The ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) have generated great interest because of the possibility that they contain intermediate-mass black holes. However, real constraints on the masses of the compact objects in ULXs are sorely lacking. We propose XMM-Newton observations designed to obtain detailed spectral and, particularly, timing information from two ULXs. This program should advance our understanding of the ULXs and help constrain their masses.
