Using the SDSS, we have identified a large number of type II quasars (high-luminosity obscured AGN, with L_bol > 10^45 ergs/s) at redshift z < 0.8. We are conducting a comprehensive multi-wavelength follow-up of the most luminous objects in the sample. We propose to continue our survey of type II quasars with XMM to obtain a large sample of objects with known X-ray properties. Our primary goal is to quantify their degree of obscuration. We also will study the statistical properties of quantities such as X-ray spectral slope and L_X/L[OIII] relative to Seyfert 2 galaxies and for the first time determine the distribution of the absorbing column densities among the luminous type II quasars.
