We propose deep XMM-Newton observations (100 ks each) of two X-ray faint elliptical galaxies, NGC 1316 and NGC 4365, to unambiguously determine Fe and alpha-element abundances. These galaxies are quite distinct in their star formation episodes (with NGC 1316 being a recent merger), therefore provide an excellent pair to quantitatively compare the relative importance of SNe Type Ia and II. Our data (in conjunction with the existing Chandra data) will allow us to best map the diffuse gas at large radii and to accurately measure the gravitational binding mass. We will then address the origin of the large L_X/L_B scatter of early type galaxies in terms of ISM removal mechanisms and the amount of dark matter.
