Scientific paper

The discovery of Nova Vul 2007 No. 2 (V459 Vul per Samus and Kazarovets, Institute of Astronomy, Moscow) was initially announced in CBET No. 1181 (D. W. E. Green, Ed.), and by the AAVSO in AAVSO Special Notice No. 85 (Henden). It was discovered independently by Hiroshi Kaneda, Sapporo, Japan (reported by S. Nakano, Sumoto, Japan), on December 25.35 UT at CCD magnitude 8.7 (clouds), and by Akihiko Tago, Japan (reported by Nakano), on December 26.38 UT at CCD magnitude 8.3. The object was confirmed spectroscopically as a classical nova, probably pre-maximum, by several Japanese observers. CCD magnitudes reported to the AAVSO as of December 26.38 UT include 8.2 (Kaneda), 7.1 (Itagaki, Yamagata, Japan), 7.7 (Kaneda), 7.8 (Nakano). Please report observations to the AAVSO International Database as V459 Vul.
