The distance moduli of several nearby galaxies determined from RR Lyrae stars and Cepheids differ by 0.2-0.3 m. It is argued that this discrepancy can be removed most effectively by adopting appropriately lower Cepheid luminosities. This would imply a reduction of the distances to galaxies in the Virgo cluster, and a corresponding increase in the Hubble constant based on the Cepheid distance to this cluster.
